Why The Best Friendships Of Your Life Will Be Built In Your 20s

Twenty20 / @margueta

We grow up thinking that the people we spend our childhoods with will be around forever. Wishful thinking. More often than not, this isn’t the case. More of our long lasting friendships are built as we get older.

In your 20s, you’re much more mature. You know who you are as a person. You have developed into someone completely different than the 15, 18, even 22 year old “YOU.” If you haven’t grown and evolved, there could be a problem. This is the reason serious, deep, friendships are built in your 20s.

You’ve grown up.

Friendships go past going out and drinking every weekend. You want people in your life you can count on. People who make you better.  The people in your inner circle are a direct reflection of you. Make sure they’re good ones.

You know what you want out of friendships.

There’s no use settling for one-sided friendships, or friendships that leave you tired all the time. Nobody has time for that. Not in this day and age. That’s why you end up letting some friendships go. That friend that drains all your energy? Yeah, she’s gotta go.

You want people you can be yourself around.

In our 20s, we really grow into our true selves. More than ever, most of us feel comfortable in our own skin. And we should, it’s taken years! That’s why it’s more important than ever to be around people you are comfortable with. People you don’t have to tone yourself down for. Nothing is better than being comfortable in your own skin, and feeling completely comfortable to be yourself. Your friends should bring out the absolute best in you.

You don’t have time.

We are all busy. We don’t necessarily see our friends every week. That is why it’s important that the ones we have, they’re worth it. You want friends you are excited to see, catch up with. Friends who are equally excited to see you. We don’t have time for people who don’t really mean that much to us. Our time is precious to us; make sure your friends are too.

20s are a period of growth and change. I feel that in our 20s, we truly develop into ourselves. It’s no wonder that our past may not make it into our future. I feel that I’ve changed immensely as a person from my early- mid twenties. Almost to the point where I don’t recognize myself sometimes. As we grow, we adapt. Our interests, what is important to us, and overall life goals may change. If we stay stuck in the same place, we won’t grow. Important as some of our past friendships may be, the friendships we maintain, and the ones we build in our 20s are the best ones yet. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
