Many of us hear the name Casey Anthony and cringe — nine years after she was accused of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, most of us haven’t forgotten about the long trial and extensive media cover. Anthony has become a household name, a pop culture reference and just another mystery we love to speculate.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget she’s still a person, too, and that even though her case was acquitted, she’s still living out there in the shadow of it all.

But recently, Anthony has broken her post-trial silence, and she still insists that she has no idea how the last hours of her daughter Caylee’s life played out. However, she still speculates how life would be if her daughter were still alive.

“Caylee would be 12 right now,” she said. “And would be a total badass.” She believed her daughter would be a no-nonsense girl who liked listening to classic rock and playing sports.

But as we know, that’s now how the story goes. Anthony is widely seen as the murderer of her child and, according to Nancy Grace, “the most hated mom in America.” Anthony admitted that, due to the media coverage and the way the story played out across the U.S., she understands completely why people have a certain image of her, though she still found it unfair that people called her guilty before there was even a verdict.

However, it’s not surprising that people were skeptical. Anthony was caught lying to the police on several instances: she claimed she worked at Universal Studios, that she had left Caylee with a babysitter, that she had told several people that Caylee had been missing and that she had received a phone call from Caylee the day before she went missing.

“Cops lie to people every day,” Anthony said. “I’m just one of the unfortunate idiots who admitted they lied.” She believed that, either way, she would have been a victim.

Even those who believe she didn’t murder her daughter purposefully believe it may have been an accident on Anthony’s part. Some speculated that the girl may have drowned and Anthony and her father tried to cover it up.

Anthony went on to say that she empathizes with OJ Simpson, and that she believes there were a lot of parallels between their cases.

Whatever happened on that day, Anthony has been learning to move on. She currently works for a private investigator, attends anti-Trump protests and enjoys taking photos of wildlife. She says, all-in-all, she’s happy.

“I don’t give a shit about what anyone thinks about me, I never will,” Anthony said. “I’m OK with myself, I sleep pretty good at night.” Thought Catalog Logo Mark
