Never Be Too Tired To Do What You Love

One time I was sitting at a donut shop just casually stuffing my face with a delicious cream filled donut when a man in his 20’s walked in and was recognized by an elder man. This elder man asked the 20-something year old how he was and he replied, “tired, man”. That is when the elder man said, “you young folks and always talking about being tired”.
And that’s when it hit me. He was so right.

I am going to start off by saying that I am not making this article about a millennial thing. But rather, I am writing this article because that was the day I was even more inspired to fill my life with experiences regardless of the fact if I was tired or not. It’s crazy to think how that one remark from a complete stranger who wasn’t even speaking directly to me will forever stick in my head.

I do believe that we are currently living in a technology filled society that has an obscured view of truly living. I believe that we are currently a part of a society that is content with “Netflix and chill” because of this idea that it’s what you do when you’re tired. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love myself some Netflix but at the same time, I am sick of hearing people miss out on real life interactions or experiences because they are too content with confining themselves to a couch.

One time, I was asked to write down things that make me truly happy and things I enjoy doing. After being asked to make a list, I was then asked when was the last time I did those things that made me most happy. I understand life gets hard and everybody has a lot of obligations but I for one know that I don’t want to look back on my life and realize I missed out on what makes me happy simply because I was “too tired” from life’s curveballs.

I am not saying that in order to “life live fully” you must go on extravagant vacations and travel the world. Yes, that would be ideal but it doesn’t work like that. What I am saying is, don’t stop enjoying the small things because of all of the big things a part of your life. If you’re anything like me, you enjoy the feeling of crumpling crisp leaves in your hand. You enjoy a cool breeze with the smell of a bonfire being blown through. You enjoy the wet nose of your pup being brushed up against your cheek. You enjoy the smile on a loved one’s face. You enjoy having a meaningful conversation with a stranger.

So many times in my life I am told, “I just don’t get how you never seem stressed out or things never seem to bother you”. And let me tell you, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I have days where work absolutely kills me and I have days were things seem to all be going wrong. I have days were I am nothing but completely exhausted, I am tired. But I have come to realize, it is much more enjoyable to just remember the important things in life. I have come to realize that it is not worth it to get yourself all worked up over traffic or over some jerk that doesn’t know what a turn signal is.

Instead of complaining that you’re tired, why not be thankful you have opportunities that make you tired. And if you’re struggling, just like everyone else, why don’t you go do what truly makes you happy. Go make yourself tired from experiencing pure joy.

All I know, is all it took was one statement from a complete stranger to get me thinking. If you’re spending so much time dwelling over being so tired, imagine how much time you could have being happy. Now go make the best out of every situation even if it is not the best situation. Besides, you can sleep when you’re dead. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
