In the United States of America, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death. That amounts to 44,193 people every single year.

Suicidal ideation amounts to a public health crisis in our country, and despite some progress, there is so much more we need to do to expand mental health awareness and services in the United States (and around the world).

In a heartbreaking effort to help spread awareness, Imgur user yveltalluna made a haunting post on the popular image-sharing website this morning. It was just one picture, a screenshot of the last conversation he had with his girlfriend before she died by suicide.

He urged for anyone considering suicide to get the help they need while telling his very personal, extremely emotional story:

girlfriend committed suicide this morning, that’s last night’s chat. last time she replied. i called, texted her like crazy. i asked about what was bothering her, she told me to fuck off, and told me not to worry about it. we started the day off like usual. she talked about how fucked the day was later that day. i kept on asking, she would dodge the question. i asked one last time, she just told me to not worry about it, she said she was okay, and told me to fuck off. she ignored my calls, my messages, everything. she later texted me that^ and that’s the last time I talked to her.

i stayed up all last night trying to reach her. i couldn’t go to her house because she lives a couple hours away.

her dad called me in the morning to tell me that they found her in her room. that was a 7 year old relationship. it will never feel the same without her. I’m not sure what to do. I’m so lost now.

Commenters on the post expressed their condolences, and shared some stories of their own loss and pain:

“Sorry about your loss. Sadly, lost a close friend from middle school last month, hit me very hard,” NballardPDX commented.

He concludes his post by saying, “Please, if you, or anyone you know have suicidal tendencies, call the suicide prevention hotline. please. 1-800-273-8255 or chat with them online. get the help you need.”
