The Truth About Not Being Good Enough

It’s something we’ve all felt, it’s something we’ve all said out loud or secretly to ourselves when no one is listening; we uttered the four words that have the ability to destroy us.

I’m not good enough.

I’m not good enough for that job because I don’t have this degree or this language or the right expertise, they’ll never hire me or even consider me.

I’m not good enough for this person, I’m not as attractive or successful or articulate as he/she is.

I’m not good enough for this city, everyone who lives in it seems to be very accomplished and they all know what they want.

Maybe I’m just meant to be lost and not good enough, maybe I’m just born to live a mediocre life.

STOP.

Stop these thoughts from permeating your brain and stop these accusations that are slowly killing you.

If you ever feel like you’re not good enough for something, it’s because you’re unaware of your own potential and your own value.

And when you’re unaware of who you could be, you’re limited to who you think you are, to who people told you were, to who society tells you should be.

Because it’s not a matter of being ‘good enough’— it’s a matter of being ‘you’ and figuring out what you’re good at and what you’re not.

If you keep focusing on being good enough, you will never really live because every day we’re introduced to a new level of perfection. Someone smarter, someone more attractive, someone more successful, someone richer and someone who is living our dream.

But when you’re consumed with all the people you’re not, you forget who you are and who you can be, you forget that you could be someone else’s idea of perfection and you forget that you embody exactly what someone else wants or what someone else is looking for.

And who sets the standard of ‘enough’ anyway? What makes someone good enough? It’s all other people’s expectations, generalizations or even perspectives and we shouldn’t lose ourselves in such temporary outlooks tinged by someone else’s idea of perfection — tinged by someone else’s idea of us.

Because it’s easy to feel good enough when you’re following a script, but life is unscripted and it doesn’t come with a manual, but it comes with great possibilities and opportunities for you to grow, for you to learn, for you to become the best version of yourself instead of being good enough for someone else. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
