The Truth About Reaching The One-Year Mark Of A Relationship

It starts like this.

You meet them and suddenly you can’t get the sound of their laugh off your mind. You feel that cliché line in movies because sparks really flew the moment you looked into their eyes. Their hand touches yours and they suddenly become your favorite form of addiction and you wanted them to hold you forever.

This is what they call the honeymoon phase; you can’t keep your hands off each other and you can’t get enough of them altogether.

3 months have passed and your relationship gradually becomes more familiar. You become comfortable with them as if they were your own skin. Kisses aren’t of an intense desire to taste their every breath anymore, no. Kisses become gentle and delicate as if they’re implying, “This is how I plan to take care of you for the rest of our lives.”

6 months have passed and texts have been reduced to the most genuine of good morning and good night messages, and you no longer have the need to constantly text each other every hour. You completely have left down your guard and leave the door open when you need to use the bathroom. 3 am strikes and you think of the most bizarre questions on how the universe works and end up laughing until you forget what was ever wrong with the world. Kisses become filled with hopeful promises of an, “I can’t wait to marry you someday.”

9 months have passed and you find yourselves dancing to 80s music while washing the dishes and laughing because you look so silly. It’s in these moments you look at them with so much love in your eyes and wonder how could a moment as mundane as this one make you feel like you’re on top of the world?

Suddenly, you’re on the verge of hitting the 1-year mark and you’re amazed as to how you could have made it this far.

It’s been a year of the most bizarre relationship you could ever imagine and yet, you still feel butterflies everytime they kiss your forehead. It was at this moment that it hit me that the butterflies never do go away when you’re with the right person. That’s why it’s so important to be with someone whom you have chemistry with, as cliché as it sounds. Because at the end of the day, even if you’ve been together for 30 years, the sound of their voice would still make you want to come home to them, every single day.

Out of every emotion in this world, love is something that should never be mundane or else, you’re doing it completely wrong. TC mark
