If You Haven’t Found Your Best Friends At College Yet, Don’t Worry

No matter where you go to school, the next four years offer the potential to turn all the new faces you see into new relationships. It’s hard adjusting to a new atmosphere and new people all at once, but one of the most amazing things about college is meeting people that will become your best friends for life.

If you’re iffy about going to that club meeting you signed up for at the organization fair simply because you won’t know anyone there, just go. You will find like-minded people when you start doing things you enjoy and following your passions. Your best friend could be waiting for you at that Cooking Club meeting.

Don’t panic if you don’t find your “clique” right away. It takes time. There are many people to meet on campus, so get involved with as many activities as possible. Friends aren’t going to magically appear in front of you if you sit in your dorm room all day getting caught up in how your high-school friends are doing.

Put yourself out there, no matter how uncomfortable and awkward it feels. If you meet someone cool in class or at a party, ask for their number and text them to grab coffee the next week. This is how relationships start.

If you’re living in a dorm, take advantage of it. This is an awesome way to make friends in your new home for the next year. Leave your door open—people will get the notion that it’s OK for them to stop in and say hello, which it should be!

Don’t worry if your social circle isn’t as big as it was in high school. Don’t fret if friends come and go within the next few years. If that girl you thought was your best friend during freshman year decides to choose that football player over you time and time again, she wasn’t worth it anyway.

In the end, it’s all about quality over quantity. College isn’t high school. It’s not about who has the most friends; it’s all about the search to find the most genuine friends. You WILL meet people who will change your life and bring out qualities in you that you never knew were there. There will never be another time in life when you are brought together with so many people your age.

So take advantage of every opportunity possible to meet someone new. You never know what could happen.

And when you do find those select few friends that continuously give you a shoulder to cry on, who will hold your hair back when you’re sick, and who will spontaneously go to the bar with you on a random Wednesday night, never let them go.
